i never compressed
Didn’t go to SF Decompression today. The events I decide to forgo have become a lot more newsworthy [to me] than the events I partake of.
With respect to the SF Decompression party, something like a really delayed Burning Man afterparty, it seemed like a decent idea until it came time to consider going, and I realized I wasn’t the target audience.
Demographic profile of SF Decompression Partygoer:
- misses the playa. actually, misses Burning Man.
- can’t get enough of fire art and big absurd metal sculptures.
- thinks the playa would be a great party if it weren’t for the sandstorms.
- will take every opportunity to wear crazy ridiculous outfit that took all of July to make, again.
- really misses the playa. Well, Burning Man.
Demographic of Naomi:
- misses the playa. well, misses laughing at partiers who can’t hack the playa.
- saw a bunch of fire art and metal sculptures, saw the pattern, and is now more interested in a lot of other things.
- seeks novelty and uniqueness.
- thinks the playa is a fun survival challenge.
- loves her playa outfit, assembled from random stuff in the space of maybe 20 minutes, because it helps her survive on the playa.
- doesn’t miss the playa, actually.
I mean, for an event like Burning Man that touts its novelty and uniqueness, the Decompression concept constitutes a major departure. It is literally the same stuff, just less of it, in a balmy San Francisco Bay climate, and exclusively full of Bay Area people.
That said, I will definitely be back on the playa in 2009. And sure, at least 50% of what’s there will be the same as last year. But I will have forgotten about it by then, and when I get there, I’ll brave sandstorms and port-a-potties to find the 50% that surprises me.
