happy in hungarian
Well, here I am in Budapest. It’s like a total communist bloc party, man. Cafes, castles, kave, kreativ dentistry…
The language is awesome. Hungarian — Magyar, which is the name of the country, the language, and the people — is completely different from Indo-European language, so you can’t rely on cognates and presupposed sentence structure to fudge your way through it. It’s an Uralic language of the Ugric persuasion, and its closest relative is (probably) Finnish.
Behold, the days of the week (/nap/ in Magyar):
Monday – hetfo
Tuesday – kedd
Wednesday – szerda
Thursday – csutortok
Friday – pentek
Saturday – szombat
Sunday – vasarnap
Does that look or sound like ANYTHING you’ve ever heard before? It’s fantastic. I am happy. Boldog.
